Executive Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer

Brian D. First is Executive Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer of SPARTA, responsible for overall management of the underwriting functions including product development, policy administration, regulatory compliance, and loss control.  Mr. First is a member of the Executive Underwriting and Risk Committees.

Prior to joining SPARTA as a member of the initial management team responsible for launching the company, Mr. First was President of the captive programs division at Discover Re. Mr. First began his insurance career at Great American Insurance Company and held positions of increasing responsibility in national program and alternative risk underwriting and marketing at Meadowbrook Insurance Group and The Hartford, where he established and led the alternative markets department.

Mr. First has a bachelor's degree in Economics from Miami University. He is a member of the Target Markets Program Administrators Association, Captive Insurance Companies Association, Vermont Captive Insurance Association, and has been a captive insurance company board member.  Mr. First is a regular presenter at national and international insurance conferences and frequently authors articles and provides comment for industry publications on a broad range of topics in the insurance programs arena. His interests include competitive sports, fishing, hiking, reading, travel, and politics.  Mr. First serves on the Board of Finance for the Town of Canton, CT and is a board member of the Canton Youth Basketball Association.
